Adam Myrick, a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, says the landfill that caught fire Monday night near Bishopville is not a permitted landfill, and they're questioning the owner of the property to find out exactly what was in the man-made pit.

Monday night, the Department of Health and Environmental Control recommended a mandatory evacuation for five or six houses located close to the fire due to the smoke.

The fire has been burning inside a man-made pit for 26 hours off of Red Hill Road near I-20.

Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office told NewsChannel 15 Tuesday that the pit was being used as a landfill and was filled with household garbage, as well as commercial and industrial waste.

Firefighters were unable to put out the fire and had to let it burn out.
